A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND MEMBERS OF HIS CABINET RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ILLEGITIMATE VENEZUELAN PETROLEUM DEAL
Dear Sirs:
As a dual Venezuelan/U.S. citizen I feel doubly entitled to express my opinion about the petroleum deal your government claims to have signed with a group of ill-reputed Venezuelans. I will not utilize legal terminology in this letter since I am not an attorney, nor have I sought legal advice to write this letter. I will speak as a citizen and assume exclusive responsibility for what I say. I belong to no U.S. or Venezuelan political parties or groups of any kind and speak only for myself.
Based on what I know about the oil deal that you announced in your publication Truth Social, calling it the “biggest oil deal in world, I say that the manner you are attempting to conduct this business represents both an insult to the people of Venezuela and to the people of the United States.
An insult to Venezuelans because is being attempted without regard for their will, presented to them as a fait accompli, without making its terms public and without the approval of a legitimate Venezuelan government. As leaders of a government of long democratic tradition, you must have known that your action would be a slap in the face for the people of Venezuela. In promoting this move the president has said on several occasions: the spoils belong to the victor, an expression which belongs in the mouth of tyrants, certainly not in the mouth of the president of a democratic and civilized country.
The proposed deal, characterized by secrecy and brute force, is also an insult to the people of the United States, since it runs contrary to the civilized way the United States is obliged to behave towards other countries, if it is to be loyal to its history and to the example set by its founding fathers.
It would be an error for me to argue against this deal by pointing out its multiple legal, technical and financial shortcomings. If I did this, I would be playing along with the farce, accepting that the deal can be made if only improved upon. Venezuelans overwhelmingly refuse to recognize the validity of this deal, basing their rejection in the obvious malignant intention of the authors to transform independent Venezuela into a U.S. satellite, run by a puppet Venezuelan regime. In pursuing this criminal intent your government has entered in association with both known and suspected criminals, some of whom have been sanctioned by the U.S. government in the past, to the point to offer payment for their heads. Good citizens, who believe that politics and ethics go hand in hand, are forced to see this association as complicity. Still worse, the enthusiastic promotion being given to the deal by the presidency indicates that you are the main promoters of this aggression to the people of Venezuela and the United States.
As additional details about this deal trickle out, the magnitude of your crime becomes clearer. It is not only a deal that would benefit the United States without corresponding benefits for Venezuela, but its internal structure appears to be designed to benefit an exclusive club of friends. Top management would be exclusively American. The deal is apparently constructed in such a manner that it would be very difficult to undo by later U.S. or Venezuelan governments. What is becoming public is that the deal has largely been put together to favor a small group of financial speculators. This is not the work of statemen working for the wellbeing of their nations, but action driven by a desire for plunder.
By denouncing this deal as unacceptable to Venezuela and as dishonorable on the part of your government, I am being loyal to both countries, my native Venezuela and my adopted United States. It is my civic duty to expose crime, particularly when committed against the people of both countries.
Contrary to what some hopeful U.S. and Venezuelan analysts might do, I will not ask you to please rectify your ways, since I do not believe that you are just making an innocent mistake. No one can be this clumsy. What you are doing is premeditated and carefully planned.
Not only will this deal collapse, but history will not be kind to you,
Gustavo Coronel
